Okay, I don't really know where to start. First of all, CONGRATULATIONS to you JOIA, for graduating from college with your BS degree. Dad and I and the whole family are just so proud of our Baby Bird for all you've accomplished and all the hard work that certificate represents. We're so thankful that you weren't seriously hurt in the accident and we're so glad to have you home for the summer.

When we moved here to Colorado we didn't know how you'd adapt to going to high school in the "big city" but you just jumped in there and accelled. I am so amazed at how well you did. And then to move to Ft. Collins and finish your degree at a state school after having completed the first three at a Christian private school is also amazing. You have faced so many giants and overcome them that I am now going to call you, JOIA THE JIANT SLAYER! We're all praying for you and pulling for you as you continue your journey.

Now let me congratulate our 3rd Sugar-Buger--ZAISY! We are so proud of you for surviving all the changes your young life has brought you. Happy 8th birthday Zais. We love you very much and hope you have a special special day!

Now let me congratulate you RACHEL. You've survived such an amazingly difficult last couple years and are now blessed to carry your 5th child. We'll be praying for you the whole way. Life is about to get even more hectic for you but God's Word says that chilren are a great blessing, a heritage of the Lord and though the world seems to disagree, we believe His Word is true and eternal. God bless you girl.

And though you don't want to talk about it, I must congratulate you DAVID for the award you are to receive this Sat. We don't know what it is but it must be a special one the way they've pressured you to walk again for your graduation from Denver Seminary. God bless you son, we're very very proud of you!

Being a mother has always been and will always be my favorite thing in the whole world. From the days of childhood when I anxiously awaited Christmas each year so that I could have a new baby doll to the early days of my marriage when I anxiously waited for my first child to arrive, being a mother has always satisfied the deepest part of me. I'm so thankful for each of my precious children and I'm so blessed and proud to see how they've grown into such Godly men and women. I'm so thankful for two daughters-in-law and one current and one future son-in-law who've also been added to my family. I'm so fortunate to have kids who still love me, regardless of the mistakes I've made and all my imperfections. Thank you for all the hugs, kisses, gifts-both homemade and store bought, flowers, songs-both sung and played, kind words, help and prayers you've given me throughout my life. Thank you for my precious grandchildren and most of all, thanks for being the wonderful children you are. I am truly a blessed mother! (And by the way, thanks for making all this possible Hink). Sometimes I get so busy I can't get everything done I want to get done when I want to get it done. Recently Jonathan graduated from Mission School in Mexico and I just wanted to tell him and anyone else who reads this, how proud his Dad and I are of him. God gave him to us to raise for some really special years (that passed by way too quickly) and these photos couldn't possibly capture all the joy, richness, strength and love he has given us over the years. Jon has always been strong, willing to swim upstream when most everyone else took the easy way. We're so proud and thankful that he has taken what God has given him and multiplied it for His glory. Our prayers continually go out to him and Rachel and his precious children as they walk out their missionary calling. We love you Jon-Boy. We've loved you from the beginning and will never stop.

Just can't believe it's been 35 years since that wonderful Sunday night when you came along and made us parents for the first time. You arrived at 8:27 pm after two and a half days of labor! You were so beautiful and we were so excited to begin our journey as a family. Thank you for bringing us so many wonderful memories over the years. We pray that God will continue to bless you in every area of your life and that He will give you many more days of happy joyous celebrations. Thank you for being our Comfort.

A Night To Celebrate

The morning had been cloudy and a little rainy but by the afternoon, the sun had come out and the birds were singing. I enjoyed sitting out on our balcony and reading while I waited for my hair to dry. Herb was next door taking a little snooze with the grandbabies. We all got ready to leave here by 4:15 and caravaned to the Post. Christina and I took the kids to their "school", also known as Army Daycare and then all 3 couples drove to an area for pictures. It was like going to Prom or something. We had a lot of fun.

The receiving line was a little intimidating as we had to follow a certain protocol when we shook hands with some high ranking officers. I just had to think about how they all had on underwear just like us. We had to stand for the posting of the colors, which was very slow and ceremonial. When we finally got to go through the buffet for our dinner, it was worth it. One of the choices was Vegetarian Lasagna and was it ever good!

After dinner there was a video which had photos from the last 3 years of the Chaplains' training which included several shots of David. Then a funny skit, a Chaplains Choir and a speech by the Commanding Officer of Ft. Jackson who is obviously a born again Christian. What an experience to be in a large room of newly commissioned Chaplains, all feeling called by God to minister to the men and women in the military. It was a little overwhelming to stand next to my son while he stood at attention. I just can't explain it but needless to say, Dad and I were very proud and honored to be there for what was called a High Banquet.

Yikes! We finally got our snow storm. We've not really had one all winter. When we got up this morning and couldn't see out of our windows because of the snow blown all over them, we knew we just had to do something.

So the suitcases are just about packed and now we just have to wait for the snow to melt so we can get to the airport.

THE MAN OF THE YEAR!!

About 36 years ago one of my most beloved and respected mentors told me, "You've chosen well, Priscilla." He was talking about Herb of course. At the time I was young and in love and thought, "Of course I have!" Through the years I've had moments of insight where I understood that God had blessed me with someone pretty special, not just to me, but to Him. There have, unfortunately, been moments when I thought I really hadn't done such a good job of picking out a husband for me/father for our kids. Those were the times when the mechanical part of our lives were challenging. But I have always understood that God had reached down and grabbed hold of a little red headed boy one day and said, "I'll have this one for my own!" Sometimes it's been hard to get others to see what was so special about him, but time after time, the truth has been revealed.

Yesterday, Jan. 27, Herb had reluctantly gone to the annual dinner for the recognition of the City of Thornton workers. He really had no idea what was coming. He'd been a little put off by the fact that no one had bothered to clue him in to who, if any, of his workers were going to be recognized. So, when they called his name for "Employee of the Year" for the whole support services department, he was flabergasted. He was so shocked that he couldn't even really absorb everything that was being said or done in his honor, like a standing ovation and a letter full of accolades. In addition, he was given two others special awards including a "team" award that he is most proud of.

That's him. Always thinking about someone else. He was so proud of his workers and how they had all pulled together. I guess he just didn't realize that God still hand His hand on his shoulder saying, "This one's special to me. How about a little recognition!"

So, here's to The Man we love! Congratulations! We're so proud of you! May God continue to bless you. May He honor you--make you the head and not the tail--bless you when you lie down and when you rise up--and may you continue to say, "Surely Goodness and Mercy shall follow me all the days of my life!"

It's hard to believe that 30 years ago Daddy helped me walk in deep snow to the hospital so that you could finally make your appearance. You always did things your own way. First you were two weeks late and then when you did decide to come, you were almost completely delivered before the Dr. even made it into the delivery room to catch you just in time.

It's been a great journey Son, one that I'm glad I was able to take. You have always challenged me to think "outside the box". I'm so glad that God gave you to us and has protected you all these 30 years through all your adventures. You remind me of Abraham. He broke the mold when it came to following God and no matter the mistakes he might have made along the way, he never lost his love and thirst for following that Unseen Hand.

Happy Birthday Jonathan. Dad and I love you with all our hearts. It's a priviledge to lift you up to the Lord today and ask Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all we can ask or think to bless you in a special way, to meet all your needs and to surround you with His peace.

Can this really be happening? Here we are, registered senior citizens. How did this happen? Where did time go? Once we were young and in love--now we are older, still in love but definitely out of shape. Thornton Senior Center to the rescue!

Today we met with Melanie, the fitness director, who gave us the one hour tour, teaching us how to use all the machines. It was the first time I was able to meet some of the ladies Dad works with. Needless to say, they were all anxious to get me caught up to speed on all of the shananigens he's been a part of with them. I can tell they all really think a lot of him.

Well, we don't really like the "senior" label, but we're pretty happy with the workout machines. It will be a good place for us to begin our body make-over. It's not very busy and most of the machines are new.

Who knows, we may end up really liking our new "senior" status!

Sorry it's been a while since we blogged but we just haven't taken the time to sit down and do it. We so look forward to all of your new blogs though so please keep yours coming!

This past Easter we bought an Easter Lily for our Sunday School room. After the blooms died, we brought it home and planted it in our little flower garden. We were so surprised when it started to grow again and today one of the blossoms opened. I think it's just another little gift from God to show us that nothing is impossible with Him and when the cold winds of winter seem close, just remember, spring is just around the corner.

The pictures of Allie bring us a sort of generational joy. As you know, we have an adorable picture of Joia hanging in our spare bedroom which was taken when she was about Allie's age. Grandma Caryl gave her that cute little Iowa Hawkeye cheerleader outfit one year for Christmas. I saved it all these years and now Allie, our youngest granddaughter can fit it. As you can see in the last picture, Joia has grown up into a beautiful young woman who we are very proud of. Vince took that picture of us when we went to visit her at CSU a couple weekends ago.

So, growing old has its rewards. We can embrace our precious grandchildren right now, fondly remember the days when our babies were little and now enjoy each of them as they walk through their life's journeys.

So remember kids, Dad and I are always cheering for you (and your families). We've been cheering for you for years and will always be on the sidelines whooping it up for you!

The joys and obstacles of life are what make us interesting people. When he was a little boy, the kids made fun of his birthmark and it took time and age to accept that he was okay, just the way he was. But as time wore on, the doctors determined that it was time to do away with the mark that he'd had since he was born. It's been quite a process but now he's healing and will have a new scar to carry with him. In time, it will fade but as he has learned, it's not what's on your arms, it's what in them. I love this man and have been blessed to be held in his strong arms for so many years. I loved watching him hold our kids and now get to enjoy watching him hold our grandkids. So don't look at your imperfections and think of them as ugly but as opportunities to see beyond them and find out what you have to offer someone else who might need you.

Another change. Boy, life is just full of them isn't it? We managed to get Joia loaded up and moved up to her new dorm where she'll finish up her Undergraduate Degree and get her Masters if all goes as planned. It was a nice warm day and we had lots of help from Vince and his family. Her dorm is on the 3rd floor with no acess from an elevator, so we had lots of carrying and climbing to do. Vince had made 3 loft beds, one for his best friend, one for Joia and one for himself. We had no idea how much hard work he'd put into them but we were very impressed when we saw the finished product.

I took my little guy with me (since I was still technically working) and he was just a trooper. If I could, I'd keep him for my own but I don't think his parents would approve.

We made a last minute dash to Target for a few more needed items and drove past the Old Navy store where Joia will start working in a week or so. That always helps to see where our kids are spending their time. When you older kids moved to Oregon and Texas, it was so difficult not knowing what your dorms looked like or where you were working until we finally made the trips and could see them with our own eyes.

Anyway, our nest feels pretty empty tonight. No kids or grandkids to fill up this little house. Just two tired parents wondering where time has gone. We miss you all and can't wait to see you all again whenever we can.

Summer Vacation With Nana and Papa

What a week! Our first time to host one of our grandchildren for a week in the summer. It was quite an experience. We learned so much about our oldest granddaughter and laughed and cried together through the week as we listened to funny songs, struggled to get up early in the mornings, bandaged up "owies", played Chop Sticks on the piano, rode pedal boats on the lake, watched "The Parent Trap" about 100 times, played at parks, attended story time at the library, ate at McDonald's, rode bikes, visited the Butterfly Pavilion, practiced swimming, played rousing games of air hockey with my nanny kids, and met cousins at the zoo on a very hot day to finish off the week.

Thanks for the week Charley. We loved having you and look forward to doing it again sometime. As each of our grandkids get old enough, we'd love to have each of them for a week. What a blessing children and grandchildren are. How could we ever live without them?

YEAH FOR VACATIONS!!!!

Happy 4th of July everybody! Yesterday we took a trip to Canon City so we could take the train that runs along the Royal Gorge. We had such a good time. The weather was absolutely beautiful for our little adventure. After we boarded, we were shown to our table which was set with white linens and crystal goblets of ice water. Since the tables had room for four, we were paired with a couple from Florida that had fallen in love with the West and proceeded to try to teach us all about Wyoming history, even after they found out we'd lived there for so many years. Kind of funny, huh. But they were nice enough and informed us that the rule was after your last child graduated from college and your dog died then you should be free to travel. I guess you learn something even on vacation.

Anyway, as the train crawled along the full, frothy, flowing river, we were treated to a scrumptious meal we had preselected. One of us had baked chicken and the other salmon along with delicious veggies and warm rolls. The desert was white cake layered with lemon filling and frosted with whipped cream. Yummy!

Afterwards we were invited to move out to an open car where we could take better pictures and view the famous suspension bridge from below. We really enjoyed that. We saw rafters fighting the rapids and cable cars moving overhead. What a great time.

After 35 years of marriage, it's kind of strange to be taking off on a vacation without any of you kids or grandkids. We enjoyed being together but continually kept talking about how much fun it would be to take our whole family on the train with us. Maybe someday, right?

Father's Day is a very special Day for me. As you know, I didn't get to see first hand how a father was supposed to interact with his children until I was married and had children of my own.

I want to thank you Herb for showing me what a loving father is really like. It has been a joy to watch you as you've fathered our children both when they were babies and you walked the floor for hours with them trying to get them to stop crying and now as you race to their side whenever they call.

Thank you David and Jonathan and Justin for continuing the Godly legacy as you raise our grandchildren to know their Heavenly Father's Love.

We're all so shocked and saddened by what happened to Steven C. Chapman's family today. We truely live in a fallen world and the enemy is out to kill steal and destroy. As we hold Steven's family up in constant prayer today, let's also thank the Lord for the blessing of life. Thank the Lord that because He lives, we can face tomorrow. We know that Steven's little girl is safely in the arms of Jesus today but the sorrow of not being able to hold her or see her is probably almost unbearable for their family. None of us know how we would react to such tragedy but let us take comfort in the fact that we understand that this life is only one phase of eternal life. As Steven and his wife and family walk through the next few days they will surely sense more and more that heaven feels much closer and more real to them than ever before. Let us hug our kids and grandkids a little tighter today but continue to release them to the wisdom and love of the Lord. None of us are in control of life but we are personally acquainted with the giver of life. Just know that Dad and I (Papa and Nana) love each of you so much and so thankful for all the days of joy and love you have filled our lives with. We bless you today and pray that He who does all things well, will meet all your needs according to His riches in Glory!

Last weekend was pretty special. We loved having Comfort and Justin and the kids spend some time with us on Sat. On Sun. we got to attend church with Bowman for his first church service. He slept through most of it but it was a beautiful memory for us all to make together.

After church our picnic at David and Christina's was nice as we watched the kids enjoy their wading pool for the first time this summer. It sure looked cold to me but the kids seemed to like it.

Thank you kids for all the flowers, cards, books and phone calls. I loved every single one of them. Being your mom is a blast!

What a blessing it is to hold a new born baby. Their skin is so soft and so new--not weathered by this old world at all. What a special blessing to hold the newest member of your own family. Thank you God for Number 10. You are so good to us and we're so blessed. And thank you for numbers 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-and 9 also. Everyone is special and we love each one of them so much.

Becoming a mother was one of the greatest things that ever happened to me and something I'd dreamed of my whole life. Becoming a grandmother has been like tasting the best and richest frosting on a delicious chocolate cake. Sitting in the audience and watching our first daughter perform on stage was always nerve wracking for me but doing the same for our first granddaughter was different. I knew from experience that no matter how she performed, she'd be the star of the show for me. How sweet to embrace the rewards of becoming a grandmother. I'm so thankful to the Lord for giving me such beautiful melodies in my life. "It's A Grand Old Flag" will always ring out a little more cheerfully for me. Thanks Charley!!

After the Talent Show was over, we asked Charley if there was something special she'd been wanting that Papa and I could get her for doing such a good job. She thought about it for a couple minutes and then told us how much she'd like to have a portable CD player with headphones. So of course Papa and I went shopping. It wasn't easy to find but Papa found it and so until we can get it to her, we took this picture so she could see it.

We also took some early birthday orders from Caleb and Dillan. Hopefully we'll have as good of luck finding what you asked for. If not, I'm sure we'll find you something pretty fun!!

Now we await the arrival of #10. It's so exciting, we can hardly wait to hold him (her) in our arms. We'll keep praying for a safe and easy delivery. Herbie and Allie are waiting for you so hurry up and get here!!

And Herbie--don't give all your hugs to the "Cookie Lady" okay? Save some for Papa and I.

And to our Mexico Grands: We love you and miss you like crazy. Take care of your Mom and Dad and keep learning your new language so you can help us talk to our neighbors when you come to visit us. And Zaisy, Papa and I will be putting some money in Dad's account so they can get you something special for your birthday too. We know it's coming up pretty soon!

SPRING HAS SPRUNG!

Spring has sprung! The first lawn mow of the season has occured. Herb was so excited to get out there and Cut That Grass! It was so chilly this morning, he had to wear his hooded sweatshirt and even saw his breath in the brisk air. Thanks for the job well done Honey! One down, ????? more to go.

A Happy Family Visit

Last Saturday was such a beautiful day weather wise which made our impromptu trip to Wyoming even nicer. Becky called us while we were still in our pj's and asked us if we'd like to meet her and Sterling in Cheyenne. Since we've been trying to get together for months, we jumped at the chance to get together for a few hours.

We met at Chili's for lunch and then meandered through the mall trying to find matching tops. (for me and Becky) Since we have such different tastes, that was a challenge but we persevered until we found something we both liked and even bought matching earring taboot. Sterling and Herb tried out the mattresses at a furniture store and were pretty much good sports about taking us girls where we wanted to go. We topped off the day with ice cream from Cold Stone and a reminicent drive around Cheyenne--where we once lived for a very short unhappy time.

The thing is, we just enjoyed being together--laughing, telling stories and talking about our kids. Family means so much to us and we want to enjoy being together when and wherever we can!

A Couple Good Days

I love Spring! Every once in a while, the weather cooperates and we can get outside and enjoy the sunshine. This past weekend was full of activity as we watched Charley, Dillan and Caleb so Joia and Comfort could have a long awaited "Sisters Day Out!" Of course, kids attract kids and Papa's book reading draws the neighborhood kids too.

On Monday, we had enough snow to make a snowman. After just a couple of hours, all the snow on the grass had melted, leaving the snowman standing on the bare grass. Kind of funny.

Joia and Vince and Herb surprised me with a little birthday party last night. It was so unexpected and fun. We all ate cake and watched "Dancing with the Stars." Today I heard from all my kids, and some of my grandkids. Even the ones in Mexico. Yeah! Just now, Herb brought me the movie that just came out today--Alvin and the Chipmonks! Yeah! Another movie that our grandkids will have to choose from.

I also heard from my sister and brother and got my card from Grandma Caryl. Amy let me go home about an hour early and so all in all, it's been a great day. I love you all and keep thinking about how full my life has been--all 55 years of it--because of all of you.

A beautiful sun filled day in Colorado--hanging out with each other and the "nanny kids" at the zoo--eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches--taking pictures and getting Owen to take ours (he was only 18 mos. when I first started taking care of him)--looking at God's creativity when he made all of these animals--having a good time and getting paid for it--who could ask for more? (Well, maybe our own nine grandbabies--our 4 kids and their loved one--and soon #10)

I have a lot more pictures of some of my staff but decided to just post a couple. I have older people, women and minorites--a diverse group. It's nice to be only about a mile from work and the mountains are always in my view. Not a bad place to be but I prefer being home and spending time with my kids and grandkids.

Easter with Papa and Nana

Easter came early this year. We were almost surprised by it, just like the disciples were so many years ago. We had a great weekend of celebrating. It started Friday night with a little hair cut for Allie--just her bangs. We trapped her in the high chair, and quickly did our job because she doesn't like to sit still for very long--just like her Daddy! Then the Rogers came, excited from their day of horse back riding and gathering "real" chicken eggs. We had fun eating pizza and dragging all the toys out of the toy box.

Saturday morning, the kids showed us their creativity when we dyed and decorated about 30 eggs. Later, Papa took Charlie, Dillan and Caleb out for the afternoon. I heard reports about funny conversations and silly adventures that included a stop at McDonalds. Justin had gone for an impresive 50 mile bike ride so Comfort and I took that opportunity to hit the shops. The Easter Bunny had a few last minute items to pick up and we needed an excuse to spend more money.

Easter Sunday started early when I put the ham on at 5:30 AM. Yikes! We then all managed to get dressed up in our fancy duds and make it to the brunch at the church by 10:00. The service started at 10:50 and our family managed to take up an entire row--all 10 of us. Herbie and Allie were in child care or we would have had 12.

After church, we drove over to Dave and Christina's house to enjoy the culinary efforts of about 7 contributors. Needless to say, we were all stuffed. The eggs were hidden in the back yard and at David's signal, the 12 child hunters began their task of filling up their baskets. Thankfully the weather cooperated and we all had a great time.

The kids were all so adorable in their Easter attire. It brought back so many memories of how hard our parents had tried to make the day special for us too. We missed our red heads terribly and just prayed that they were making some special memories for themselves down there in Mexico.

Scouts Honor

Friday evening we had the priviledge of attending Vince's Eagle Scout Ceremony. We were so honored to be in the audiance and learn about all of his Scouting achievements. His brother was the MC and did a great job of tying everything together. We're very proud of him and glad that Joia introduced us to this outstanding young man. The percentage of boys who originally join Scouts and attain the level of Eagle Scout is very small. Vince was encouraged to remember how important this honor was throughout his life and to continue to show the attributes that it signifies. I'm confident he will!

Vince's parents, Kathy and Ernie prepared a wonderful buffet which everyone enjoyed after the ceremony. We had some delicious chocolate cake to top it all off. It was such a nice evening to see all of his siblings (four sisters and one brother), his Nana, other extended family members, as well as his friends and several others from the community there.

We're very thankful for this young man and how respectful he is of our beautiful daughter. We pray that God will truly bless him as he continues his journey.

Okay, today I've spent a loooooonnnnnngggg time trying to figure out how to put several pictures on our blog with different paragraphs and I can't get it to work. If you have words of advice on how to move pictures around, let me know.

Dad and David went to an Avalanche game this week and Christina and I stayed home and did our regular things--I watched Survivor (which I'm getting tired of) and Christina bathed the kids and put them to bed. A lovely time was had by all!!!

We were all sooooo glad to hear from you Jon-boy. We try to not worry but it's hard not knowing exactly how things are going for you. We anxiously await those promised pictures.

In the meantime, we'll pray that God will continue to supply your needs and help you to learn Spanish quickly. If He can give you the gift of tongues, I know He can help you with Spanish.

Papa and Nana got to have some Herbie/Allie time today and we loved it! I'm so thankful that God has blessed us with all you kids and all your kids.

We'll be praying for you "Interview Boys" this week. May God's favor shine upon you.

A Bit of Nanny Time

Hi Kids,

Thought you might like to see a little of my nanny time. I build marble mazes, read books, and help create birthday cards for parents. Lots of fun! My favorite days though are when I get to take the boys to the park when the weather is beautiful and I can enjoy the mountains and brilliant Colorado sky. I loved my days as a mom when you were all little and now I get to do a repeat. Sometimes I feel guilty for enjoying the good days but I have enough bad days to keep me balanced. Many many days I wish I was taking care of my own grandchildren but, for now, Owen and Ian will have to do.

I'm sending the camera to work with Dad tomorrow so we can get a picture of his office. Believe it or not, I've not even seen his new one.

This past week has been an emotional roller coaster for us with four kids going in four directions. One crossing the border to Mexico, one up in a Black Hawk helicopter, one driving back to the Springs in a bad storm and one trying to recover from a bad illness! When we decided to have a big family, I wasn't thinking far enough ahead to realize all the tumultuous possiblities of our future. No wonder people our age get wrinkles in their foreheads and can't remember how to sleep through the night.

In retrospect though, we wouldn't change our plans at all. In fact, I still think about adding to our family from time to time. (If I can ever talk Papa into it that is.) There has to be another child out there somewhere who'd like to get in on all this "Nagel" fun.

So go ahead, kids. Follow your dreams and reach for those stars. Dad and I will be right behind you trying to hold you up in prayer and helping you any way we can.
